They show up at 3 am, night after night, when it’s time to harvest, and masterfully translate that into the bottle. 77 Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 Merlot, 8 Petit Verdot, 5 Cabernet Franc, 2 Malbec Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Opus One offers up bold, expressive black. Over the last 30 years, the carefully chosen Opus One team has mapped the wine’s vineyards down to each individual vine. Even after tasting legendary vintages like 20, we couldn’t stop raving about the 2016. Opus One has a remarkable throughline of pitch-perfect quality and complexity that we rarely see replicated in Napa, Bordeaux, or beyond. Our tasting of nearly a dozen vintages highlighted the wine’s exquisite and graceful ageability. Opening, pouring, and indulging in Opus One is a singular pleasure. It’s full-bodied, opulent, and impeccably balanced. We fell in love with its plush mouthfeel, which is dominated by blackberry and cassis that coat the mouth with a creamy texture before accents of sage, black olives, dark chocolate, and espresso emerge. In the glass, it boasts an inky ruby hue with elegant and polished aromas of crushed red and blue fruit, baking spice, and woodsy herbs. Update: When we posted our review to share our experience, Morgan at Opus One immediately contacted us and wanted to better understand our experience and she was very apologetic. James Suckling honored their 2016 release with a near-perfect 99-point score, calling the 2016 “complex and complete.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave the 2016 98 points, praising the wine’s dense palate as a “tightly coiled spring ready to explode.” But the 20 Opus One and the second label of Opus One tasted off Each had a rather tinny flavor and were very tannic. We have partnerships consisting of a large network of licensed retailers from within the United States, Europe and across the world ensuring orders are fulfilled. I was very underwhelmed with both but have been told repeatedly by wine folks that “Opus needs time” and that it’s unfair to judge them with less than 10 years of bottle age. This was the third time I’ve had Opus after tasting the 2009 at an event and 2011 at the winery. The mix of oak and tobacco spice are still present and last thru the moderate length finish. The mouthfeel is the best part of the wine by far. By comparison, some of the more fruit-driven vintages age for 15 to 20 years, which is still a considerable amount of time, just not quite as long as some of the producer’s finest years. Medium-plus acidity adds freshness and balances well with the velvety soft medium-plus tannins. A good balance of high acidity, tannins, and alcohol allows the best Opus One vintages to age for 20 to 30 years or more.
